Performing Arts Program:
Music
Crestmead State School appreciates the
countless benefits music education has for students. We have developed a
vibrant classroom, instrumental and choral music program, which is available
for students in all year levels to participate in, that continues to grow in
strength each year.
All of our music programs provide our students
with opportunities to make music.
Classroom Music
All students participate in class music
lessons that provide them with hands-on experiences to develop the foundation
skills of music - beat, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, singing, movement, listening,
musical literacy, creating and playing.
Students in prep receive 45 minute weekly
lessons all year while students in years 1 to 6 receive weekly 30 minute music
lessons for one semester.
Instruments taught
- Prep to Year 2 - students
create music with a variety of instruments including maracas, chime bars,
egg shakers and other untuned percussion instruments.
- Years 3 & 4 - Yamaha
student recorder.
- Year 5 - Untuned percussion
instruments.
- Year 6 - Ukulele
Choral Program
At Crestmead, our Choral Program is available
to students from prep to year 6. There are 4 choirs. They are as follows:
- Poppin’ Preppies (prep)
- Junior Choir (year 1 & 2)
- Concert Choir (students from
year 3, 4, 5 and 6)
- Pasifika Choir (year 6
students)
Choir practices are held once a week, during
play sessions. Our choir teachers encourage students to tap into the joy of
singing and music making while developing and refining their vocal techniques,
ensemble skills and performance etiquette during their weekly lessons.
Instrumental Music Program
Our instrumental music program encourages
students to build resilience and perseverance as well as foster positive
teamwork skills while developing responsibility, discipline and commitment
through regular attendance at music lessons, rehearsals and performances.
Year 2
Our instrumental music program begins in year
2 with students participating in the String Immersion Program. This program
allows all students the opportunity to learn the basic skills associated with
learning how to play a violin. During phase 1 of our program, students attend
small group lessons for 30 minutes each week with their strings specialist
teacher for one term. At the end of each term, the students participate in a
concert dress rehearsal where they learn important performance etiquette skills
before they perform at their String Immersion Concert in front of peers, family
and friends. Students who demonstrate aptitude and dedication are offered the
opportunity to participate in Phase 2 of the string immersion program, which is
held in term 4.
Years 3 to 6
For students in years 3 to 6, enrolment in the
Instrumental Music Program ensures students learn a musical instrument of their
choice, under the professional guidance of their instrumental music
teacher.
The instruments available for students to
learn from year 3 are:

semester, with results included in each students report card, which is issued
to parents/ caregivers.
Bands & Ensembles
